Doctor Willie Ong is a well-known doctor who recently shared tips for managing Diabetes on his Facebook page.
According to Dr. Ong, everyone is at risk of having diabetes and he showcase on what will happen to a person if diabetes strikes.
But first, it is important for us to understand what the causes of diabetes are:
> Hereditary (from birth)
> Being overweight
> Eating too much
> Lack of exercise
If a person has diabetes, there are certain organs that can be affected and, if left untreated, may cause serious damage. Organs like the heart, liver, stomach, pancreas and also the intestines are at risk of failing due to diabetes.
The Pancreas plays an important role in our body by producing insulin.
“Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use,” according to Endocrineweb.com
Insulin also plays a significant role in our body because regulates the body’s blood sugar levels. Dr. Ong said that if a person has diabetes, the body’s cells can be deprived of energy, causing cell death. When your cells don’t get enough energy, all of the glucose will build up in the blood, damaging various organs.

> You urinate often
> You often get dehydrated
> You get tired easily
> You have dry skin
> Wounds don’t heal easily
> Hands occasionally get numb
> Eye sight is also affected
Here are the complications caused by Diabetes:
>Coronary heart disease
“Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries,” according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
>Stroke
“A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die,” according to the Stroke Association.
>Neuropathy
“Neuropathy is the term used to describe a problem with the nerves, usually the ‘peripheral nerves’ as opposed to the ‘central nervous system’ (the brain and spinal cord).” according to Medical News Today.
>Vascular Disease
“Vascular disease is an abnormal condition of the blood vessels. Blood vessels (arteries and veins) are the tubes through which blood is pumped throughout the body. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to nourish every part of the body, including the brain, kidneys, intestines, arms, legs, and heart itself,” according to Vascular Cures.
> Eye Disease
“Diabetic retinopathy affects blood vessels in the light-sensitive tissue called the retina that lines the back of the eye. It is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes and the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness among working-age adults. Diabetic macular edema (DME),” according to the National Eye Institute.

To cobat these effects, Dr. Ong gave a list on how to prevent diabetes:
1. Consume healthy foods – It is better to eat healthy foods like vegetables and foods that are good for the heart. Make sure to eat moderately, because eating too much can cause diabetes.
2. Exercise – Make sure to exercise daily to use up all the sugar that is in your body.
3. Lose some weight – Overweight people have a higher chance of developing diabetes.
4. Get yourself checked – Getting yourself checked by your doctor is important in order to detect possible signs of diabetes and other diseases.
5. Have a healthy lifestyle – Vices, such as drinking and smoking, contribute to the development of diseases in your body.
6. Always check your feet – There could be wounds on your feet that should be treated immediately, especially if you have diabetes. If the wound will not be treated immediately, an infection can start at the bottom and crawl its way up your legs. The only way to prevent the infection from spreading is by cutting your leg off.
7. Check your blood sugar – Having abnormal blood sugar levels can be a sign of diabetes.
