A stroke is caused by improper blood flow to the brain – typically occurring when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot, bursts or ruptures.
If blood and oxygen are blocked off in the brain then the cells there begin to die.
According to strokeassociation.org, the disease is 5th cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States.
There are 2 major types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic.
A ischemic stroke caused by the aforementioned blockage in the arteries leading to the brain while a hemorrhagic stroke is caused by reduced blood flow.
People who survive a stroke may experience permanent brain damage as well as numbness and/or malfunction in the other areas of the body.
